So the time has come for me to change my livejournal username. I mean, I'm no longer a Sycamore in any true sense of the word, and I, having packed on the lbs over recent years, am no longer a stud. But I still feel 200. I haven't chosen a new username yet, but I will. And this will be where I announce the change. So be on the lookout.
Also, Deb and I were sealed in the Nauvoo temple over the weekend. It was awesome. Send me an IM on AIM if you want to know about it.
I have like 50 hours of work to do in the next 10 days. It's gonna suck. F you, National Bureau of Labor Statistics. |

So I was married one year ago today. It is my anniversary.
And the Sox are playing the Yankers. Let's hope Boston can give me a good anniversary present. |

My IPE paper is finally complete and sitting in the mailbox of the professor. It was the last academic thing I had to do here at ISU, so now I am officially done. My time as a janitor ends tonight, as well. And my time in Terre Haute draws short. It is May 31, 2007. In less than one month's time, I will be in my new apartment in a new city in a new state. Yay. |

So I'm closing in on being married for one whole year (I'm like a month away). It's a strange thing for me to think about...I mean, I'm really happy to be married. But I never thought in a hundred years that I'd be married this soon in my life. Then again, I hadn't really considered doing anything but being a lawyer, either, so I guess things work themselves out naturally. We (my wife and I) are going to the Nauvoo temple in June to be sealed together. So it'll make our marriage all the more complete.
So I'm a janitor at the place Deb works (I'm doing the sisters a favor, since their old janitor retired) for the month of May. This is m second career stint as a custodial arts practitioner. It got me thinking that this is easily the worst job I've ever had, because kids are filthy. So what's the worst job you've ever had? |

F the Rocket. Would it have been cool to have my childhood idol, Roger Clemens, on the Sox? Sure would have been, if only because his career would come full circle. But, in the end, I guess I'm in the Bill Simmons camp on this: he had better go into the Hall of Fame with a dollar sign on his cap, because this deal was all about money (not about winning). I wish him good luck, but not when he pitches against the Sox.
I've slowly been packing things. It's a depressing thing, this moving. Yet another in a series of reasons I'd like to get a tenure-track job in Utah, so I don't feel the need to move. Or I could, in Mike C's words, "get a job at a big R1 and make sure your moving allowance is large enough that you can get someone to come in and move you."
Fightin' Pacifists play for the first time tonight. I'm taking the mound as our starting pitcher. It should be pretty awesome. |

The semester is over (for the most part). I get a Chipotle burrito today for lunch. Deb and I are moving into a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom apartment in Bryan, TX in June. Tom Brady's a tool for wearing that Yankers cap; in response, I will wear my Red Sox cap. Packing sucks, but the Fighting Pacifists do not!
Oh, and I have two jobs this summer: research assistant and janitor (though not at the same place). I feel like Will Hunting (MATT DAMON!). |

So I'm proctoring exams over the next couple of days. One of my professors has to spend some time working on a visa application so that he can get into Cuba for some research (and I use the term research loosely; research implies actual scholarly activity, and this professor will probably be sipping rum on the beach). And I'm proctoring another prof.'s exam today as a favor to his GA. Instead of sitting there and staring out the window, I'm making semi-productive use of my time by reading Robert Dahl's A Preface to Democratic Theory. Heck, I had to buy the book for a class (and we never ended up reading/discussing the book), so I should get some mileage out of it. So far, I'm through the first part (on Madisonian democracy). Seems like an OK read, if you're in to democratic theory...lucky for me, I dig political theory. Plus, my choices were limited to Dahl or The Social Contract, and this week's too busy to worry about Rousseau.
I'm suffering from the same lack of productivity that my good on-line friend drenilop is. Hopefully I can get myself out of it in the next couple of days. I really need to get this final paper for IPE finished. And I've got other things on my "to do" list that may end up being bigger issues than previously anticipated (like coding that data for LSM). Plus, I've got financial aid junk to worry about (both at my new institution and my current one) and I need to find some sort of income for the next couple of months. It's a shame I'm married, because if I weren't, I could find a sugar-momma.
Softball season is fast approaching. We've put together a crack team for the Terre Haute Parks Dept. Summer league. Hopefully we win a couple of these. It's mostly guys from church and kids from Taiwan (I know, interesting mix). I'll probably be playing a little 1st, a little outfield, and maybe filling in at pitcher. Hopefully I can continue my hot hitting. We've got practice on Thursday. If you're in TH on Tuesdays and Wednesdays over the next several weeks, call me and you can come cheer for the "Fightin' Pacifists"! I think our team shirts will have Ghandi on them standing like the Notre Dame Fighting Irish mascot. And my number is 14 (for former Red Sox great Jim Rice). I used the number to honor Rice and all border-line Hall of Fame outfielders, unless they played for the Yankees.
Oh, and the Red Sox are 5-1 against the Yanks this year, on the strength of some pretty decent pitching and some really timely hitting. |

Man, these next two weeks will sort of suck. Not because of my workload. Mostly because they're my last two weeks as an ISU student. Next year I won't have class with Dr. Chambers, I won't eat lunch with Kim, Petra, Shyam, and Andrea. I won't get to eat at ethnic food restaurants with my favorite people in political science. It's sad.
Don't get me wrong...it's great that I can get out of Terre Haute. But I'll miss people. And I'll miss my comfort zone. |

So I'm watching Chasing Amy and I have a couple of thoughts:
* Jason Lee's a tremendous actor. Even in this, a supporting role, he's truly awesome. And I say this having saw My Name is Earl earlier this evening. This movie is a tour de force.
* Ben Affleck sucks. And he wears a "Van Dyke" beard thing (same thing as the Guy Fawkes beard in V for Vendetta). Like, this and Dogma are the only two movies that he is in that I don't want to yack while watching. And the reason is clear: there are way better actors in those movies, thus hiding Ben's worthlessness. I don't care if he has hit J-Lo and Jennifer Garner. He sucks.
* Overall, this movie is seriously in the B+ to A range. It's got pretty much everything you need in a semi-romantic comedy: good looking female lead, hopelessly romantic male lead, and a funny supporting "best friend" character. And it's awesome that two chicks make out in this movie. |

First thing's first: I hope Heavenly Father has received the victims of the VaTech tragedy into his arms. And I hope He blesses their families and friends as they grieve during this extraordinarily difficult time.

Deb and I are hopefully going to close the deal on a townhouse this week. 2 bdrm, 1.5 bath in Bryan. Looks pretty awesome.
I hate feeling sick. I've got a sore throat and it sucks.
I've got three final papers to do before finals week, plus a couple of other big assignments. And...oh crap. I'm late for meeting with Linda. |

| MPSA (so far) |

So MPSA has been good. We got to Chicago on Wednesday night/early Thursday morning. The hotel we are staying at is not the same as the conference hotel, but it's still a comfortable thing. The conference hotel is awesome (the Palmer House Hilton), but it's too expensive for me to stay in on what ISU provides for conference. And the food has been great; I've eaten at this nice place called the Corner Bakery (with drenilop), Geno's East (home of some delicious deep dish pizza), and this place called Beef and Brandy (a little place near the hotel).
[EDIT]
So I went out tonight after getting some work done on this final proposal and my newspaper column. First stop: the Crystal Room of the Palmer House to meet with my future colleagues at TAMU. Nice people...I think it'll be a good fit. I did that for about an hour. The room was a little cramped and pretty warm and full of booze, but other than that, I couldn't complain.
At about 11:30 I headed down to the Big Downtown bar and sat around with Shaym, Priya, Petra, and one of Petra's friends. This other dude, who was a discussant at a panel I was at yesterday, was there and was pretty hammered. But he was a pretty cool dude. Again, a good time all around. I definitely think this dude was in some way trying to make a pass at Priya, but I can't be sure.
Then I came back here and talked about the UN, the rhetoric of GWB/Clinton/Bush41/Cold Warriors, people who complain about taxes and still want welfare, and the Nixon/Kissinger relationship with Shyam.
And now there's some weird movie on HBO. Thanks HBO for bringing such fine programming. I mean, I really feel like a lucked out watching Madagascar three times in the past day and a half. But now you're rocking House of Wax. I can't believe my good fortune. </sarcasm> |

So I'm going to spend a lot of my time at this conference trying to kiss ass to all of the people I'll be working with/taking classes with next year at A&M. Mintz and Geva are both here, although on different panels, and one of the senior grad students is also here. So that's cool.
Chicago is a little chilly.
I'm tired and nervous.
I miss Deb. |
